Researcher, Doctoral Supervisor (Young Changjiang Scholar)

Email: yongzhang@sjtu.edu.cn

Researcher and doctoral supervisor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, recipient of the Young Changjiang Scholar award and participant in the ShanghaiTech Young 35 program. Listed among the top 2% of global leading scientists annually. Engaged in research on optoelectronic integrated circuits focusing on light field manipulation in subwavelength structures.

Key achievements include:

- Proposing the integration of subwavelength structures with on-chip waveguides to overcome phase coupling mismatch, leading to the development of topological high-bandwidth electro-optic modulators.

- Introducing a low-power consumption scheme for piezoelectrically tunable optical modulation, with power consumption three orders of magnitude lower than traditional thermo-optic methods.

- Developing on-chip multidimensional joint control methods, establishing subwavelength chip fabrication processes, and independently producing multidimensional multiplexing optical chips, resulting in a multiple-fold increase in chip data capacity.

The outcomes have facilitated domestic independent manufacturing of subwavelength chips, which have been utilized in optical chip R&D across 23 domestic institutions including ZTE Corporation. Recognized in a Nature review article for outstanding device tolerance and acknowledged by IBM Corporation as impressive results.

Principal investigator for more than 10 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China Key Project and key research and development programs. Published 27 first/corresponding author papers in journals such as Light Science Applications, with one paper selected as an ESI highly cited paper and four papers featured on the cover. Holds over 20 granted/applied patents in the United States and China, authored chapters in English monographs and Chinese books, and delivered 17 invited talks at domestic and international academic conferences. Served as Vice Chairman of the IEEE Photonics Society Shanghai Chapter and served as guest editor and editorial board member for journals including Science China Information Science, Journal of Semiconductors, and Frontiers of Optoelectronics. Also served as a technical committee member for conferences such as ACP2022.
